Aurora Joan Veazie was born to Carl and Aurora Weaver in Madison, Wisconsin on March 6, 1933, the very day newly inaugurated President Franklin D. Roosevelt closed all banks in an effort to combat the Great Depression.
She grew up on a vegetable farm along Highway 14 outside Madison with her three sisters and two brothers. In 1952, just two days after graduating from Evansville High School, she boarded a bus and moved to Seattle, Washington. After working for Western Electric and Tally Corporation and attending Seattle Pacific College, she left college, married Ralph Edward Veazie, and earned what she fondly called her "Ma Degree," giving birth first to Mark and a couple years later to Peter.
In 1969, Ralph passed away from cancer, and Aurora dedicated herself to raising her two boys in Seattle's View Ridge neighborhood. During those years, she established the tradition of Saturday morning breakfast debates, where the small family spent many mornings discussing faith, religion, God, and the world's problems. To make ends meet, she drove a school bus for Concordia Lutheran School and worked at Evangel Christian Bookstore.
Aurora excelled at the art of neighboring. She organized the annual 42nd Avenue NE block party, a tradition that continues to this day more than 60 years later. She convinced her church to sponsor a refugee family from Vietnam. She also organized a sunrise Easter service on the shores of Lake Washington bringing together multiple churches throughout the Seattle area.
In 1990, after her sons had grown and moved to other parts of the country, Aurora relocated to Lipan, Texas, to care for her aging mother until her mother's death. She then moved to Arizona in 1999. There she spent the remainder of her life embracing her role as a grandmother, first in Tucson (1999-2003) and later in Flagstaff (2004-2023).
In Flagstaff, Aurora helped establish a healing prayer group after Mass and could often be found stuffing Sunday bulletins and sharing jokes with friends at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church. After moving to Phoenix at the end of 2023 to be closer to family, she passed away peacefully on November 20, 2026 at the age of 93, eager to see the Lord.
Aurora was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her five siblings, Carl, Nell, David, Nancy, and Marcia; and her son, Peter.
She is survived by her son, Mark (Heather); her daughter-in-law, Wendy; and her grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew (Felicity), Aaron, and Devin.
Her relationship with God was always at the center of her life. Throughout her years, she was quick to speak with anyone about Jesus. She leaves her family and friends with this enduring advice: "It is not in the trying; it is in the trusting."
A Vigil Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, at Norvel Owens Mortuary.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on November 13 at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church in Flagstaff, followed by burial at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
