Obituary

Flagstaff has lost one of its great longtime residents. Native of Flagstaff Betty Jean Upton (Hood) 74, Passed away peacefully in her Flagstaff Home on January 5, 2020. Betty was born October 10, 1946 to Edward "Ed" and Meta Hood.  Betty was a lifelong resident, she attended Flagstaff High School and went on to marry her sweetheart Charles " Chuck" Upton. Betty was devoted to her family and found the greatest joy in her beloved role of wife, mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother "G-G"

She was co-owner with husband Chuck of a local Chevron service station Upton Chevron. In 1978 Betty began attending Northern Arizona University where she graduated in 1982 with Magna Cum Laude honors and dual degree in Art and Interior Design. In 1986 Betty With her husband Chuck bought Cunningham Interiors.  Betty was noted as saying "Every home needs a sense of feeling and style. That is what we are here for to help give that" and she gave homes all over Arizona style for 28 years. In 2009 Betty started teaching Interior design at Northern Arizona University sharing her knowledge and experience with hopeful design students. Where they called her "the cutest darn thing in the world", "the most understanding teacher who knows what she is talking about" and "One of my favorite teachers"

Betty was a talented artist who enjoyed painting and stained glass and loved to spend summers in her garden. Her and husband Chuck enjoyed time on their boat at Lake Powell and RVing in their motorhome. Betty joined Beta Sigma phi Sorority in 1965 and throughout her 55 years in the group held several positions of office including President (several years ) Vice President  and Treasurer and was crowned the Valentines Princess twice. She taught preschool bible study at First Southern Baptist Church, was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Soroptimist club where she served the community she grew up in and loved. Later in her life she was a member of her Book club where she enjoyed sharing her joy of books and reading with others.

Betty is Survived by and will be remembered lovingly by her two daughters Melissa Upton List (Kenneth List) and Melinda Upton, Her 5 Grandchildren Chelsea Grissim, Matthew List, Brooke Bohlender, Ariel Bohlender, and Tyler List and her 5 beloved great grandchildren Andra, Antoinette, Annabella- Jean, Justin and Aurora whom all lovingly called her G-G. Sister Marilyn Hood Gerkey of Tucson, Sister in law Barbara Gomez (Ron Goats) of Pinetop, and eight nieces and nephews who all expressed how much they loved her and how greatly she will be missed.  Betty is preceded by the love of her life and husband Charles "Chuck" Upton, Her Parents Edward and Meta Hood, and her Great Aunts Ruby Jordan and Myrtle Thompson. She was cherished by her entire Family and will always be remembered as Sister, Mom, Gram and GG. Betty made an impact on her family and the community and will be greatly missed.

Funeral Services will be held January 14, 2021 at 1 pm at Citizens' Cemetery.
