Obituary

Reverend Caleb Holetstewa Johnson., (Colonel) US Army Retired passed away peacefully after a short illness surrounded by his loving family on 30 July 2026 in Flagstaff, Arizona at age 93.

Caleb was born 13 October 1932 in Tuba City, AZ to Fred and Minnie Johnson. He grew up living in Moenkopi and Kykotsmovi Village in Arizona.  He graduated from Ganado Mission High School and then attended and graduated from UCLA and Princeton University in1960.  He volunteered to serve in Vietnam from 1968-1969 and served in the United States Army for 28 years retiring at the rank of Colonel.  He served as minister in Winslow Presbyterian Church and retired from the Presbyterian Ministry in 1990.  He served many years as a representative of Kykotsmovi Village and until his death was Pastor of the Hopi Independent Church that his father (Fred Johnson) founded before him.

Caleb is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Nancy Johnson, his children David Poleyestewa (Debbie), Michael Johnson (Rebecca) and Rebecca Johnson (Bruce) and grandchildren, David Jonah, Julia, Anna, Nathan, Lisa, Jacob, Gianni, several nephews and nieces.

Services will be on August 14th, 2026 (Friday), at 9:00AM at the Hopi Independent Church in Kykostomovi, AZ.  Interment will follow at the Hopi Independent Cemetery.
