Daniel Contreras' Obituary
Daniel Contreras passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 28th, with his daughter by his side at their home in Phoenix, AZ. Daniel was born in Flagstaff, AZ to Pio & VirginiaVillegas Contreras.
Daniel joined the National Guard at Fort Huachuca, AZ, in 1954 when he was only 17 years old. He did his 6 months of basic military training. He then served honorably in the Army in the Dismounted Drill and Bayonet and theMI Rifle and Guard Mount Soldier for six years in the 5th infantry division at Fort Ord, California, where he received his honorable discharge. Daniel was always very proud of his military service. From there he earned his first job working for Price Construction in Page, AZ. He worked as a driver building roads and highways for one full year.
Daniel married his wife Mary (Sinfornia) Padilla Contreras in 1960; together they had 4 children,Theresa Dolores, Dan Jr., Richard and David who were all raised in Flagstaff.
He moved back to Flagstaff and worked for JELD-WEN Co. until 1996 when they closed the plant and he retired. During his retirement he worked for Flagstaff Medical Center and Flagstaff Public Schools. Later he decided to move to Scottsdale, AZ, to be close to his son Dan Contreras Jr., where they enjoyed going out to eat, and hanging out together. Later his daughter moved so his family could be together until his death when he could not battle his illness any longer.
Daniel loved riding his 1976 Bicentennial Harley Davidson with his wife Mary by his side all over Arizona and also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and family vacations with his wife, kids and dear friends.
Daniel is survived by his daughterTheresa Dolores Johnson (Timothy) & son Dan Jr. Contreras; grandchildren Christian De Anda, Hilary Johnson & Jillian Johnson;great-grandson Niko De Anda; two brothers Pete Contreras Marielena) of Flagstaff, and Rudy Contreras of Torrington,CT;Three sisters Martha Nieto (Bernie Sr.) and Mary Gardner both of Flagstaff, and Ercy Rodriguez (Martin) of Casa Grande; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Thursday, February 2, 2017, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church - 224 S. Kendrick St, Flagstaff, AZ. Rosary starting at 9:00 am, Mass at 10:00 am, internment with Military honors to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
