Darlene S. Gilbreth
Darlene Sidwell Gilbreth died at home on April28. She was 77. Darlene was born in
Chicago Illinois, April 14, 1930. Her family moved to Riverside California soon after
her birth. At two she developed tuberculosis of the spine. She was not expected to
live, walk, or have children, Darlene was a very strong individual who accomplished
all three. Her daughters have the greatest respect and love for her.
Darlene graduated from Polytechnic High in Riverside. She moved to Prescott in
1956 and started college in Flagstaff at Arizona State College (now NAU) in 1961.
She graduated in 1965 phi Kappa Phi Music, English. In her teaching career,
Darlene taught orchestra in the Flagstaff Public Schools, was a violinist in the
Flagstaff Symphony and helped form the Flagstaff Youth Orchestra and an adult
string chamber group called Interludes. A life long leaner she was passionate
about music, and earned degrees in Music, English, Special Education and Guidance and
Counseling and she retired from teaching as a special education teacher in Tuba
City.
Darlene is survived by her daughters, Kathy, (Ron) Maas, of Juneau, Alaska,
Vicki (Frank) Loskota, of Flagstaff, AZ and Valerie (John) Fairchild of Glendale, AZ. Four grandchildren Michael, (Amelia) and Debbie Maas, Richard Fairchild and Jeannette
Johnson and two half brothers Donald and Marshal. She loved her pets. She is also survived by her Persian cats Amadeus, Waltz, Snuggles and her sheltie dog Candy.
She was preceded in death by her parents Melvin Sidwell, and mother Helen Bixel.
In loving memory, a musical celebration of her life will take place 11:00 Monday morning at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests interested individuals to donate in Darlene's
name to second chance animals or Flagstaff Youth Orchestra.
