Obituary

Debra "Debbie" (Madea) Joyce Johns was born on February 15, 1959, in Williams, AZ, to Henrietta Joyce and Robert Joyce. One of eight children, she was raised in a close-knit family filled with love, laughter, and adventure. As a child, Debbie was known for her fearless spirit, often keeping up with her brothers in their activities—though she drew the line at catching frogs.

Debbie attended Kinsey Elementary and South Beaver, later continuing her education at Flagstaff Junior High School before graduating from Flagstaff High School.

While in high school, Debbie met Carlton Johns Jr., who first became her best friend and later her lifelong partner. After graduation, they welcomed their first child, Tauris. As a young mother, Debbie pursued her passion for beauty by attending cosmetology school. Following her training, she and Carlton welcomed their second child, Carlton III, and Debbie began her career at the JCPenney Salon.

Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open her own salon, Blades, which she proudly operated for several years. During this time, they welcomed their third child, Corrin. In time, Debbie discovered her true calling in cooking—finding joy in feeding others and bringing people together through her meals.

Debbie had a deep love for life's simple pleasures. She enjoyed fishing, cooking for family and friends, and spending time watching her favorite Westerns—moments that brought her peace and happiness.

Their family continued to grow with the birth of their daughter, Mercedes, and in 1998, they lovingly welcomed their bonus daughter, Destiny.

Debbie also spent summers working at St. Joseph's Youth Camp and later devoted many years to serving her community through the school district. She worked as a cook at Killip Elementary, Coconino High School, and Summit High School, where her warmth, kindness, and talent for cooking left a lasting impression on students and staff alike.

Debbie was a remarkable woman whose presence lit up every room. Her radiant smile, vibrant personality, and genuine compassion made everyone feel valued and loved. She had a gift for connecting with others and creating a sense of belonging wherever she went.

Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, generosity, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Debbie is survived by her devoted husband, Carlton Johns Jr.; her children, Tauris Johns (Tami), Carlton Johns III, Corrin Johns (Sonya), Mercedes (Alex), and Destiny (Trever); her beloved grandchildren, Konner, Jaden, Josiah, Ieyonna, Brahnon, Carlton IV, Kalani, Amari, and Maliah; her great-grandchild, Braxton; her brother, Robert (Wanda) Joyce; and her sisters, Mattie Watkins and Arleisa Joyce Hatcher; along with a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
