Edith Sarah Ratliff, 91, died peacefully at her home in Flagstaff on November 9, 2005. She was born on July 22, 1914 to Richard and Lillian Ike on a farm near Williston, North Dakota. She was the eighth of eleven children that included six brothers and four sisters. She married her high school sweetheart Irven Ratliff on June 26, 1938. They moved to Spokane, WA in 1946 and to St. Helena, CA in 1960. For many years she worked as a ward clerk and nurse before retiring in 1973 and moving to Chehalis, WA. In retirement, she and Irv traveled extensively throughout the US. One of Edith's often stated claims was that she had visited every state in the US. In 2002, Edith moved to Flagstaff to live with her son and his family.
Mrs. Ratliff is survived by her daughter Sandra Ratliff of Prescott, son Michael (Janet) Ratliff of Flagstaff, sister Marge Tyrrell of Portland, OR, grandchildren Jon (Theresa) Scully of Williston, ND, Brent (Heather) Scully of Walla Walla, WA, Sidney Scully of Berkeley, CA, Nic Ratliff of Portland, OR, and 3 great granddaughters.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Irven Ratliff, by her parents Richard and Lillian Ike, and by 9 siblings.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 20th at 2:00 p.m. at the Norvel Owens Mortuary, 914 E. Route 66. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Johnson-Ratliff Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Northern Arizona University.
