Obituary

On June 30th 2008, Eduardo "Eddie" Cruz Gutierrez was summoned to heaven by our lord, Jesus Christ. Eddie passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends while at the Olivia White Hospice House.

Eddie was born on April 22, 1926, in Williams, Arizona to Jose Gutierrez and Elvida Cruz. Eddie's family lived in Williams, Arizona until 1942, before moving to Flagstaff. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1946, as a Staff Sergeant. Eddie was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and long time member of the American Legion.

Eddie returned to Flagstaff after serving his country and was employed in various jobs. He worked at Southwest Lumber Mills, Navajo Army Depot, and the Arizona Daily Sun. Eddie left the Arizona Daily Sun after eleven years to expand his tortilla business, the Loma Vista Tortilla Shop.

The business became a major supplier of Mexican Food Products that were sold to numerous restaurants, schools and grocery stores through out Northern Arizona. For many years the Tortilla Shop employed numerous family members, citizens of Flagstaff, and college students.

In the early 1980's Eddie sold his tortilla business. Shortly thereafter, he became employed with Flagstaff Public Schools, working at Sechrist Elementary School. Eddie retired after working approximately ten years.

Eddie is survived by his wife of 46 years, Emma Gutierrez (Lira); his sister Inez Garcia (Jess); his sons Edward Gutierrez (Toni), Randy Tirado (Beverly), and Danny Gutierrez (Debbie); his daughters Helen Negrete and Judy Gutierrez; eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four "pending" great-grandchildren, and several god-children. In the past 82 years, Eddie has been blessed with many other family members and friends.

Eddie is preceded in death by his father and mother, Jose Gutierrez and Elvida Cruz, brothers Bernardo and Joe Gutierrez, Sisters Guadalupe Gutierrez and Mary Figueroa, and his daughter Cathy Compos.
