Gloria Maxwell of Flagstaff, AZ passed away on February 1, 2024 at the age of 95.

Born in San Francisco, CA she moved to Flagstaff at the age of two with her parents Juan and Jacinta Garrido, who had emigrated to the United States from northern Spain. Gloria leaves behind her son-in-law Steve Jones; brother-in-law Edmund Kowalski; nieces Maryanne Roberts (George) and Sandra Kowalski (Reggie Eccleston); nephew Andrew Kowalski (Rosa); great nieces Stephanie, Christine, and Katherine, and great nephew Joseph; cousins Teresa Blas Mulligan and Rome Blas, Jr.; and a large network of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elmo, her daughter Diana, and her sister Delphine (Garrido) Kowalski.

Gloria graduated from St. Anthony's School and Flagstaff High School. She enjoyed a lengthy career applying her analytical skills while also enjoying interacting with customers who became friends, in positions at the Bank of Arizona and the Coconino County Treasurer's Office (from which she retired at the age of 74 after hearing a patron ask, "Is she still here?"). As the wife of the long-time Flagstaff police chief, Gloria enjoyed a colorful and memorable life, including the times Elmo would bring fascinating people home for dinner – some of them folks he had arrested, but thought well of.

She would often accompany her Spanish-speaking mother on errands and visits in and around town, widening the circle of people she enjoyed seeing.

Gloria was an avid reader, an animal lover, and a spellbinding storyteller who loved to share memories of the amazing and humorous people and situations she encountered in her beloved Flagstaff.

Services will be private, with Norvel Owens Mortuary managing the arrangements.
