Harlo Dale Hansen, 87, of Long Beach, California, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026
Born on July 26, 1938, in San Francisco, California. He was the son of Harold Hansen and Lois Van Arsdale. He was raised in Fort Seward, California and later moved to San Francisco to complete his bachelor's and master's in Social Anthropology, where he met his wife Ana Maria Hansen from Guatemala.
In 1972 he moved to Guatemala where he started a new profession as an elementary school teacher. In later years he moved into school administration before returning to the classroom for his final years at the Colegio Maya. In 1997 he moved back to the United States, but this time to Long Beach, California where he could be closer to his grandchildren and sons. He continued teaching a few more years before wrapping up his career working for the state of California. Harlo was an avid reader on a plethora of subject matters and had a fascination with car designing, traveling, and gardening, especially his bonsai collection.
He is survived by his wife Ana Maria Hansen; two sons: Christian Hansen (Angela) of Flagstaff, Arizona; Joseph Hansen (Jennifer) of Long Beach; five grandchildren Nick, Matthew, Aryn, Erika and Allison; 2 great-grandchildren Kai and Chris; and his sister Cecille Tommila.
A celebration of life will be held in Long Beach this summer.
