Obituary

Helen Mae Zion Thatcher, zichrona livracha, retired attorney, died in Flagstaff on Tuesday November 19, 2019. Daughter of Robert Bernard Zion and Lillian Sabel Zion, Helen was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on January 30, 1925. She graduated from West Philadelphia High School in June 1942, with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences cum laude from Ohio State University, where she was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, in December 1944, with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in June 1950. Between degrees, she taught returning G.I.s economics at Ohio State and studied advanced economics at the University of Chicago. She was admitted to the Bar in April of 1951. Helen married Thomas Thatcher of Bucks County Pennsylvania in August 1951 and they had two children, Leslie Thatcher (1952- ) and Mark Thatcher (1954-) before their divorce in 1961. Helen was a world traveler who changed residence at least 30 times in her life and employment somewhat less frequently. Cosmopolitan, sophisticated, elegant, fashionable and charming, she loved dogs, clothes, and the arts. Her outsized presence will be missed.

She is survived by Leslie and Mark and their spouses, John Hanson and Kali Thatcher, grandchildren, David Hautemulle, Lilian Hautemulle, Michael Hautemulle and Ishai Thatcher, nieces Robin Rosenberg of Atlanta, Terry Stetzner of Belgrade Montana and Karen Sandler of Washington DC. Services will be family only.
