Obituary

James Edward Hughes Collins, 73, of Flagstaff, Arizona, passed away on January 11, 2024. He was born on September 29, 1950, in West Orange, New Jersey.  James was a brilliant, loving, wise and "larger than life" individual who will be deeply missed.

James is survived by his wife, Katherine Collins, and his daughters Alyssa Collins Burdsal, Katrina Collins-Hernandez, and Jaima Collins Earp, along with their spouses (Brad, Wil, & Ryan) and his beloved grandchildren (Evelyn, Adelyn, Landon, Braydon, & Oaklee).  He is also survived by his 10 wonderful siblings (Louise, Suzi, Mary Beth, Didi, Mimi, Peggy, Frank, Jesse, Kati, & Marti).  He was preceded in death by his parents, Tabor and Mary Beth Collins.

James attended St. Vincent de Paul for his primary education and later graduated from Maryvale High School. He continued his education at Grand Canyon College and Northern Arizona University.

In his professional life, James dedicated himself to teaching. He worked at Parker High School, Leupp Public School, and Mount Elden Middle School in the Flagstaff Unified School District, where he taught PE, Geography, and Social Studies. James was recognized for his exceptional teaching skills and was included in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. He always strived to provide experiential opportunities that fostered leadership and built confidence in his students.

James found joy in spending time with his family, which was his favorite hobby.  He was an exceptional father, husband, grandfather, and mentor.  His legacy and biggest accomplishments were those that call him Daddy and Grandad.   He cherished every moment with his loved ones.

A Celebration of Life for immediate family will be held in honor of James. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Coconino Community College Program Giving for Career and Technical Education.
