Obituary

Iris Eugena "Jean" Miller Mickelson

Jean Mickelson, 99 years & 8 months, died peacefully February 5, 2022 in Flagstaff AZ at home. She lived a full life and was looking forward to her 100 th birthday June 4, 2022.

She was born June 4, 1922 in St. David, AZ to Loyd Lewis Miller, Sr. and Della Judd Miller the second of 10 children. Her pioneer heritage gave her strength of body, zeal, a strong work ethic, love for her family and a fervent belief in Christ.

Jean graduated as valedictorian from St. David High School in1938 receiving a full music scholarship to ASTC/NAU in Flagstaff, AZ at 16. She loved shoes and bought them with her college food $. She played piano, cello, accordion and organ. Jean sang with the Shrine of the Ages Choir. She won the Arizona State Wool Contest that year with her fully lined wool suit. Jean received bachelor's and master's degrees in Education from ASTC.

On October 14, 1940 she married her eternal companion, Ernest "Mick" Lyman Mickelson, in Flagstaff, AZ and later, 1956, in the Mesa Arizona Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and they loved each other faithfully for 52 years. In 1987-88, they served together as temple workers.

Mick & Jean created a life with 7 children while both taught school—Mick for 32 years and Jean for 22 years. Jean taught elementary music, home-bound ED and created a curriculum for pregnant students.

Jean loved music from birth, played for church at age 8, learned multiple instruments and willingly shared her zesty, spunky organ ability for her entire life. She conducted hymns for the congregation at age 99 with enviable energy and enthusiasm.

She loved her community of friends and sent written monthly letters to family and cousins for many years. Her joy was being with Mick; camping, fishing, living 'off the grid'& dancing (which is how they met).  She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, shoes (her favorite accessory always), beating everyone at 3/13 and maintaining order in her surroundings.

She was predeceased by Ryan Neils Mickelson (grandson) 1967, Gay Nell Mickelson (daughter) 1982, Mick Mickelson (husband) 1992, Andrew McFadden (grandson) 2000, Jacob Grimmett (grandson) 2009, Lexee Tabbutt (granddaughter) 2021, Neils Mickelson (son) 2021.

She is survived by her children: daughter-in-law, Darlene Mickelson (Neils), Harvey Mickelson (JoAnn), Kay Jean Poulson, Joe Mickelson (Wes), Jill McFadden (Jeff), Pete Mickelson (Janet), her 24 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
