Josephine "Fina" Martinez Berruezo, 84, died in her home June 8, 2007, surrounded by her immediate and extended family.
"Fina" was born on December 13, 1922 and raised in Flagstaff, Arizona. She was the fifth of seven children. She attended St. Anthony's Catholic School and Flagstaff High School. Following graduation, she worked at Ben Franklin's store located in downtown Flagstaff. Fina then moved to California in 1946 to be with her sister, Nella Martinez Cacicedo. She attended a Spanish picnic where she met Joseph Berruezo, a local Bay Area resident. They married on July 13, 1947 in Richmond, California.
Fina was an active member of St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Richmond. She was an energetic participant in parent and scout organizations. She was also a wonderful cook and an avid reader. Fina enjoyed the theater and was an excellent dancer. She passed on to her children an appreciation of the Spanish culture and family values.
In 2004, Josephine and her husband returned to Flagstaff to be with family members and friends.
She is survived by her loving, devoted husband of sixty years, Joseph E. Berruezo, and her three children, Emilie Berruezo Rodger, Edward A. Berruezo, and Celeste Berruezo Dwyer – her four grandsons, Nicholas and Steve Berruezo, John and Joseph Rodger.
A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Sunday, June 10 at 2 p.m. 224 S. Kendrick, Flagstaff.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent either to Northern Arizona Healthcare or an Alzheimer's organization in her name.
