LAWSON HARVEY HOPPER, JR.
Lawson Harvey Hopper, Jr., 98, of Buckley, Washington, passed away at his home in the Foothills Adult Family Home on Friday, March 2, 2012.
He was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 16, 1913, to Lawson Harvey and Rose Sophia (Bristowe) Hopper. His family moved to the family farm outside of Belleview, Florida, in 1920 when Lawson was seven years old. He graduated from Summerfield High School in 1931.
Lawson moved to Winslow, Arizona, in 1937. He went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad on June 13, 1937, first as a fireman and then as an engineer, and stayed with them until his retirement 40 years later in 1977. After retirement, Lawson moved to the home he built on Puget Sound in Shelton, Washington, and lived there until 2007, when he moved to Puyallup and then to Buckley.
Lawson joined the Belleview Methodist Church on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925, and remained a Methodist all his life. He was also a lifetime member of the Winslow Masonic Lodge No. 13 F. & A.M.
Lawson married Bernice Pillsbury Siegmund in 1951. They had almost 30 years together before she passed away May 6, 1980. He adopted Anthony Edward Siegmund, Bernice's grandson, and raised him as his own son.
He married Ella Mae (LaCoss) Lyman on October 16, 1982, in Winslow, Arizona, and they had almost 25 years together before she passed away on October 4, 2007.
Lawson is survived by his five stepchildren Dorthalee Hermann of Oregon, Donald Siegmund of Winslow, Arizona, Helen Kay Blumlein of Orting, Washington, Judy Ann Craighead of Milbrae, California, and Kenneth Lyman and wife Anne of Fayetteville, North Carolina; his sister Ruth Margaret Hopper of Tomball, Texas; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. His wife Bernice, his wife Ella Mae, his brother Lieutenant Colonel Bristow S. Hopper, and his son Anthony Hopper preceded him in death.
A memorial service for Lawson and Ella Mae will be held Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 2:00 pm at the Norvel Owens Mortuary located at 1505 W. 3rd Street, Winslow, Arizona.
Internment will be at the Desert View Cemetery in Winslow, Arizona.
