Lucy Walkup, former first lady of Northern Arizona University, passed away on January 15, 2018 at the age of 101. Lucy was born in Benton Wisconsin, a mining town where her father was superintendent of Lead and Zinc mines for Southwest Wisconsin.

Mrs. Walkup, a long time educator at all levels, came to Flagstaff in 1948, from Sheridan, Mo., when her husband J. Lawrence Walkup accepted the position of assistant professor of education and psychology at Arizona State College, Flagstaff.


A graduate of Rosary Colleges at River Forest, III., Mrs. Walkup was one of 245 graduates who received a diploma in Walkup's first graduation class in 1958. She received a Master of Arts degree in education.


A former music and elementary school teacher, Mrs. Walkup has received numerous honors. She taught English at Flagstaff High School upon arriving in Flagstaff and was honored as the dedicatee of the 1958 Flagstaff High Schools yearbook, Kinlani. After her husband's death she was a volunteer at Di Miguel elementary school for nine years. She was named Woman of the Year at Northern Arizona University in 1961, and both she and her husband
were dedicatees for the 1960 NAU Homecoming.


In Lucy's lifetime she was a member of Nativity Church, Gamma Phi Beta, American Cancer Society, Faculty Wives, PEO, Homemakers Club, Symphony Guild, Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma and Assistance Guild of Flagstaff. She was also a member of the Gamma Beta chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha and Kappa Delta Phi, an honorary society. Mrs. Walkup and her late husband, J. Lawrence Walkup, are survived by their daughter Susan Walkup, niece Kathi Hlavac-Flagstaff, Sister Loretta Brewer-California and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.


Services will be Saturday, January 20th at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel; Rosary will be recited at 10am followed by Funeral Mass at 11am. Interment and graveside services will take place at Wheeling Cemetery in Wheeling, Missouri.
