Obituary

Marian L. (Heinze) Holmes-Fried passed away peacefully at the Olivia White Hospice House in Flagstaff, AZ on June12, 2008. She was born July 4, 1927 in Wolf Point, MT to Otto C. and Viola Heinze. As a young girl, the family moved to Fort Collins, CO where Marian graduated from high school in 1945. Marian was an accomplished musician and attended the University of Colorado where she majored in music education.

She married William (Bill) Holmes in 1949 in Fort Collins. They began their family while living at the ranger station in Happy Jack, AZ. Bill and Marian spent many years building the family and living at various Forest Service stations across the southwest, including Pecos, NM, Sedona, Prescott and Flagstaff, AZ. To this union was born five children. Bill and Marian were divorced in 1984.

Marian met Robert (Bob) Fried through her work with the Flagstaff Symphony. Their mutual love of music grew into a deep and committed love for each other and they were married on April 4, 1987. This partnership blossomed into the beautiful home and astronomical facility known as Braeside, which they designed and built together. Bob passed away tragically in 2003 in a plane accident.

Marian was always involved in her children's interests and volunteered as a scout leader, worked with the Flagstaff Snowsharks swim team and provided innumerable piano accompaniments at music recitals.

Marian was an avid supporter of the arts. She worked for several years as a docent at the Museum of Northern Arizona, where she also worked in the gift shop. Marian served on the Guild and Board of the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and served as Board president.

Marian's greatest happiness was entertaining family and friends at the Braeside Manor. She was an extraordinary hostess.

Marian is survived by a large, loving family including her children, Allyson Holmes of Sedona, AZ, Dan (Hamidah) Holmes of Flagstaff, AZ and their three children, Susan Holmes of Sheridan, WY, Martha Holmes of Sanger, CA, Joe (Janet) Holmes and their two children of Scottsdale, AZ.
