Obituary

Mark Phillip Nelson, 59, passed away on December 28, 2017. Even though he was battling cancer a second time—and winning—he passed away suddenly while walking home in the cold, wintery night. He is survived by his loving wife, Candy; his three daughters, Angela, Sharla, and Mayleea; his son, Christopher; and seven grandchildren.

Mark was originally born in Columbus, OH. He served as medical support in the army and was honorably discharged after three years. From there, he moved to Washington State where he earned an associate degree in nursing. Even though he loved the sea, he moved to Flagstaff, AZ to pursue a career as an RN at Flagstaff Medical Center. He worked there for 16 years and retired when his health would no longer permit the long hours that nursing requires.

Mark loved history and the collectibles associated with it. He collected everything from books and coins to historical models and paintings. Above all, he loved his family and friends. His favorite songs were dark and moody but meaningful at the same time, which fit his personality perfectly. Though he could be considered an eccentric and—at times—gruff man, this simply covered an emotionally-attuned and caring interior.

In lieu of flowers, please consider the needs of the family. If you can help, please donate to the meal train for his wife, Candy Nelson. She is visually impaired and cannot drive. With the sudden death of her husband, a hot meal can be a huge blessing.

Services will be held at Norvel Owens Mortuary on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
