Norman Edward Mayes, age 76, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 23rd, at his home in Flagstaff, AZ. He was born in San Diego, CA on January 27, 1941 to Norris and Leta Mae Mayes. He grew up in East Texas and later graduated from Texas Tech University where he met his wife, Barbara. His degree was in Business and Engineering and he worked in the oil and gas industry until the family moved to Flagstaff in 1976 and opened a Western Auto Store. Norman worked the majority of his career in sales at Barrows Office Products, covering all of Northern Arizona where he made many friends. Norman also served his church faithfully in various leadership positions, including Bishop and Young Men's Leader. After he retired, Norman and Barbara developed the Flagstaff Map Company, which became an important aspect of the Flagstaff tourism industry. In 2004, the couple spent two years as missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the church history sites in Palmyra, New York. In the past ten years, Norman spent countless hours as a Docent at the Museum of Northern Arizona, volunteering for the Flagstaff Police Department, the Forest Service as a Trail Ambassador and working with the Boy Scouts of America.

Norman was an avid hiker who loved the outdoors. He enjoyed photography, traveling and river rafting. He had a personal and deep interest in World War II history and was extremely patriotic. His greatest joy came from sharing these things with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara, daughters, Julie Pineda, Cindy Ellis and Karen Cutchen. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Rebekah Norma Ellis, Braedyn Johnson, Lauren Mayes Johnson, JJ Ellis, Jessica Ellis, Taylor Mayes Cutchen and Brennan Cutchen.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 29th, 6–8PM at Norvel Owens Mortuary, 914 E. Route 66, Flagstaff, Arizona, 86001. A second viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 30th, 9 – 9:45 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 625 E. Cherry Ave., Flagstaff, AZ. Funeral at 10 AM. The internment will follow at Flagstaff Citizens Cemetery.
