Raymond Richard Hagelberg, 81, passed away January 12, 2008

Born June 11, 1926 to Ray E. and Cecelia Schramer Hagelberg in Geneva, Illinois.

Enlisted in the USAAF in 1945. Gradated from Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, 1949. Attended Purdue, University; Ph.D. from University of Iowa in curriculum and instruction, 1957. He joined Arizona State College at Flagstaff as assistant professor of education and principal of the college elementary school in fall 1957. Retired as Professor Emeritus from Northern Arizona University's Center for Excellence in 1989.

Ray focused his career on elementary math and science education. He helped organize workshops for Native American educators throughout the West. He served on the board of the Arizona Academy of Science and Mathematics. Along with graduate students, he developed a laboratory safety program for schools including safety posters still being used.

Ray enjoyed the northern Arizona environment and community. He spent time outdoors gardening and exploring. He was superintendent of hobbies at the Coconino County Fair for several years and helped organize the Flagstaff Model Railroad Club in the early 60's. Member of Flagstaff Federated Community Church for nearly fifty years.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ellen of Flagstaff, Children: Michael, of Flagstaff,Karen Chrisman and husband Jim, of Tucson,Carl and wife Stephanie, of Los Alamos NM; Sister: Leah Gibson, Flagstaff.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Flagstaff Federated Community Church, 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 23.

Instead of flowers, the family requests donations made to Northland Hospice, the organ fund of the Federated Church, or charities of choice.
