Stephen Michael Shapiro, 69, passed away May 21, 2011 in Flagstaff, Arizona. He was born April 26, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York to Harry M. and Helen Shapiro.
He is survived by his wife Laraine of Flagstaff, Sons Adam and wife Valerie Shapiro of Phoenix, Alexander and wife Karen Shapiro, of Silver Spring, MD, Ryan Shapiro f Flagstaff, Benjamin and wife Ashley Shapiro of Springville, Utah and his granddaughter Kate Shapiro of Springville, Utah.
He is preceded in death by his parents Harry M. & Helen R. Shapiro and brother Ronald M. Shapiro.
Mr. Shapiro received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. His Masters degree in Physical Education was received from Colorado State College, Greeley Colorado. In 1966 he relocated to Flagstaff where he received a Masters degree in Education from Northern Arizona University.
Mr. Shapiro worked for the Tuba City Public School System for 27 years where her taught Physical Education, English, and the Honors Program. He served as Chair of the English Department, Grant Writer for Tuba City High School, and Dean of Students. He coached football, wrestling, cross country, and track. HE was an excellent coach, who led his wrestling, cross country and track teams to several state championships.
Steve loved his family and took great joy in family gathering. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in the great outdoors.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 23, 2011, at Norvel Owens Mortuary, with interment at Citizens Cemetery in Flagstaff.
