Obituary

Mary Theresa Hill (86) passed away Sunday, June 16th, at her home in Flagstaff.  She was born March 2, 1938, in Kansas City, Kansas, to the parents of John and Mary Wittek.  She graduated from Ward High School in 1956.  She then attended Kansas State University where she met the love of her life, Dave Hill.  After her graduation with degrees in speech and radio-TV, Terri and Dave were married in 1959, and it was a good fit lasting 64 years.

At the start of their marriage, Terri supported Dave his career pursuits in New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma, while she became a homemaker, gourmet cook, and mother to two wonderful children, Lynne and Chris.

In 1976, Terri obtained her master's degree in speech and drama from Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma.  She then began her teaching career at Hefner Junior High in Oklahoma City working with students in speech and drama.

In 1985, the couple moved to Cottonwood, Arizona, to build a new house and start a new chapter in their lives. They explored every corner of their new state from the top of Mount Humphreys to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Terri continued teaching at Humbolt Junior High, and Camp Verde and Mingus Union High Schools.  She ended her twenty-years of teaching at Beaver Creek Elementary School in Rimrock.

The retired couple then began new adventures together, and they became ardant sport fans of Northern Arizona University.  They attended every NAU football game including all road games with the team beginning in 2001.

In 2010, Dave and Terry generously established two scholar-athlete endowments at NAU, one for the football team and one for the women's golf team.  Terri loved helping young people, and she was very proud of the endowments which will continue long after her and Dave's deaths.

Terri also loved dogs, and she and Dave raised eight different dogs during their time together, with the last four being therapy dogs for hospice patients.

Terri was a devout Catholic with a deep faith.  She attended Mass every weekend and raised her childen in the faith.

Terri also loved travel, and she was able to experience many parts of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, and Europe.  Most recent, she found a favorite destination on the warm beaches of Costa Rica where one will be her final resting place.

Terri is survived by her husband Dave, children Lynne Maffeo and Chris Hill, three grandchildren Alaina Huffaker, Riley Hill and Nicholas Maffeo, and great-grandson Graham Huffaker.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 3rd at 2:00 p.m., at Norvel Owens Mortuary, 914 E. Route 66 in Flagstaff.
