Obituary

Vernon Harry Fairchild, Jr. of Flagstaff died January 28, 2017 in Flagstaff, AZ. He was born May 5, 1947, also Flagstaff, AZ . to Vernon H. and Betty Fairchild.

Harry attended Emerson Elementary and graduated Flagstaff High School as an honor student in 1965. During his younger years and through High school, Harry was active in the youth group at First Baptist Church, 123 S. Beaver St. and a leader in many activities. He attended Arizona State Teacher's College (now NAU) for two semesters before enlisting in the US Army.

He served in Viet Nam from 1969-70 with the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" and later transferred to the motor pool following an injury. He ended his military career in 1974 at Fort Knox where he serviced self-propelled artillery. He married while there and had one son.

Harry's love of cars and racing led him to a career in auto mechanics. It was rumored he raced the family's 1954 Ford station wagon and the 1963 Ford Galaxy while in Phoenix to "watch" the races. His first auto job was at Dick's American Service Station. After his military service, he worked for Dick's again and for years at Babbitt Ford and later for other service vendors as a diesel mechanic.

Harry is survived by his son, Michael, one grandson, father Vernon H. Fairchild, sister, Kathy, and brother, John and was preceded in death by his mother, Betty and a sister. Services are Saturday, February 25th, 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Heights UMC, 2500 N. Fourth Street, Flagstaff, AZ.
